Pastor Michael & Rebekah Weant Costello


 

 On Sunday, July 3, 2011, Philadelphia Lutheran Church was pleased to welcome back to their home congregation, Michael, Rebekah and Andrew Costello. They were vacationing for several weeks with family and friends in N.C. and offered to help lead worship while visiting with Pastor Gary and Linda Weant. Rebekah served as the guest preacher for the 11:00 AM Worship Service and Michael served as our guest organist. Both Michale and Rebekah are 2002 Graduates of Lenoir-Rhyne University and  2006 graduates of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C. Michael is Assistant Pastor, Organist and Cantor at Grace Lutheran Church, River Forest, Illinois and Rebekah serves part time at Grace as Minister of Christian Education and Spiritual Formation. In 2010 Rebekah received her Master of Sacred Theology degree from LTSS, is a candidate for ordination in the ELCA and plans further graduate study in the future. They are parents of a son, Andrew Costello, and are expecting their second child, Lydia Marie Costello, around September 1, 2011. We were pleased to welcome home Michael, Rebekah and Andrew.

Saturday, October 23, 2010 from 4:00 PM -- 7:30 PM-- Philadelphia sponsored OCTOBERFEST 2010 in celebration of Martin Luther's rediscovery of the Good News of The Gospel and in thankfulness for Philadelphia's Mission and Legacy as the oldest Lutheran congregation in Gaston County and in North Carolina west of the Catawba River. Tickets were $9.00 per person and covered a delicious meal of home cooked BBQ pork and chicken with all the trimming plus live music, entertainment, games, activities, ministry and historical displays from area Lutheran Churches, an antique car and tractor display, hay rides for children and youth and a gift bag of educational and devotional resources for every family that participates. Children under 10 are free. It was a great opportunity to reach out to extended relatives, friends, neighbors and the wider Dallas community and invite them to join us for a great time in fellowship, good food, recreation and celebration of Martin Luther’s rediscovery of the Good News of the Gospel. On Sunday, July 24, 2011, we gathered to give thanks for Philadelphia’s 244th. Anniversary in Mission (1767– 2011). Our Guest Preacher was Seminary Graduate and Intern, Laura Voelkert Weant, a 2010 graduate of Duke Divinity School, intern from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary serving at Bethany Lutheran Church and the Coalition of Lutheran Congregations, Boone, N.C. and on the ELCA candidacy roster for ordination. Our Guest Liturgist and Assisting Minister was Seminary Graduate and Intern Jonathan Weant, a son of the congregation, 2010 graduate of Duke Divinity School, intern from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary serving at Grace Lutheran Church and the Coalition of Lutheran Congregations, Boone, N.C. was recently accepted in the PhD program at Dayton University and is on the ELCA candidacy roster for ordination.

In a time when global economic stability is shaky, tensions and suspicions divide the human community and there is much upheaval and uncertainty in the world, the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is more relevant and needed than ever. Philadelphia Evangelical Lutheran Church remains a congregation grounded in God’s steadfast love that endures forever made visible in Jesus Christ. In response to God’s Love, Philadelphia seeks to be thankful for God’s faithfulness in the past, faithful in Christ’s call to ministry in the present and hopeful in God’s Promise to be with us into God’s future. HOMECOMING is a time for members, families, former members, relatives, neighbors, distant friends and the hundreds of people whose lives have been touched by the ministry of Philadelphia Evangelical Lutheran Church over the past 244 years, to gather in worship and thanksgiving for God’s grace that has sustained Philadelphia Lutheran Church in ministry over these years. The day included special music, great fellowship and a delicious covered dish, picnic dinner.

Pastor Justin & Kari Eller, Missionaries in Bolivia, visited Philadelphia

Sunday, July 31, 2011 was a special time in the Life of Philadelphia Evangelical Lutheran Church. Philadelphia's partner ELCA Missionaries in Bolivia, Pastor Justin and Kari Eller participated in the 11:00 AM Worship Service. Following the service, the congregation sponsored a congregational, pot luck, lunch at 12:30 PM followed by a special presentation by Justin and Kari on their ministry and mission work in Bolivia. This was a great opportunity to gather in worship, share in fellowship and good food and learn more about how you and your family are participating directly in the global Ministry of Christ's Church.
